Our History
Beatson Fans & Motors was founded by Herbert (“Bert”) Beatson in 1928 in a small rented lockup in Stanley Street, Sheffield, with one other employee and trading as “Beatson & Company”.
The following year, the business moved into part of a nearby building in Mowbray Street owned by Hope & Anchor Brewery.
As his reputation grew, Herbert was able to rent more space and start building a trusted team; “he” became “we”, and eventually the business occupied the whole site. The brewery moved to new, larger premises elsewhere and in 1954, Herbert purchased the Mowbray Street site from them.
In 1960, Herbert retired and the business was incorporated and renamed “Beatson & Co (Electrical) Ltd”. Whilst Herbert remained the largest shareholder, his son Kenneth became Managing Director, and his wife Helen Company Secretary and Office Manager.
During 1972-4, Ken Beatson was also Chairman of our industry’s national and international trade association, the AEMT.
Ian Beatson became the third generation to take the reins of the business in 1984 and further established the reputation of the Beatson name. During this aggressive period of growth, Ian began importing motors into the UK, often sacrificing his next payday to put the business another step ahead of its competitors.
In 2005 Beatson moved from its original home to Newhall Road and the current Managing Director, Tom Beatson, was appointed in 2007. The industry has changed dramatically in the 21st Century, but despite being a business firmly rooted in its core values, Beatson is far from resistant to change.
Under Tom’s leadership, the firm has adapted to changes in the market, environment and legislation in order to continue thriving, whilst offering the same high standards of customer service that have been the Beatson trademark for four generations.
Beatson Fans & Motors Ltd have been an active member of the AEMT (Association of Electrical & Mechanical Trades) since 1956, ensuring the highest standards within the industry. 4th generation managing director, Tom Beatson believes:
“Our customers need a service they can rely on and we endeavour to do our best for anyone we can.
It is our heritage and depth of knowledge, as well as our national and internet presence, that has helped keep us up to date.
We continue to offer the highest standards of quality and service that we always have, whilst looking after our social and economic responsibilities.”
Who We Serve
Our clientele base is so varied it’s impossible to say we serve only one industry. From rock and roll stars to national universities, to oil rigs and more. We keep our customers cool when they need it most, and running smoothly wherever we can.
We’ve sold Ted Nugent spare valves before their gig at Sheffield City Hall in 1977, kept The Prodigy’s Leo Crabtree cool behind his drum kit, and contributed first-class fans for the Cyberhaze effects for Coldplay. We’ve supplied film studios across the country, including James Bond in the days of Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan. As well as various projects for studios and effects, as well as our core supply to local and national industry.
The Beatson family has supplied a number of academic institutes including The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. We’ve worked for big names such as ITM Power, Gripple, British Gypsum, British Steel, Corus, Outo Kumpu, and Marcegaglia, and supplied BP specification Fans to Oil Rigs. We have worked with Mondelez (Bassett’s Allsorts) since they moved to Owlerton in 1933 right up to today. Our customers know us well and know they can trust us to get the job done.
Our work covers far and wide from major steelworks and heavy industry in Sheffield to the national ‘heavy’ industry, both directly and indirectly. We supply fans for the local food economy, from kebab shops to Chinese restaurants and takeaways. We keep local engineering firms running with motors and gear motors and supply anyone in the UK from all types of industries as well as supporting the industries in our trade association, the AEMT.
