New Efficiency Ratings for Electric Motors

Hello everyone,

I thought that I’d just write a quickie about the new IE1,2&3 efficiency ratings which will apply to all three phase electric motors above 0.75kw as of the 16th June 2011.

Thanks to some spanners in an office in Brussells the whole electric motor market is going ot be turned upside down!! All the efficiency ratings of standard 3phase motors will change and the prices will go up. Standard EFF2 motor as we know now will be phased out and replaced with the new IE2 motors which is rated the same as the current EFF1 motors. the idea behind the new legislation is to save energy and therefore save the planet!! But all the energy calulations go out of the window if the object being driven by the new efficient motors isn’t very effiecient!! So far I haven’t seen the maths that says the extra metals, energy and resources used to build the new efficient motors isn’t less than the amount of metal and energy used now!! 

I think you can gather from my tone how I feel about the new legislation. However when the time comes Beatson Fans & Motors Ltd will have the new IE2 Motors on the shelf!!
